At what point in life do we REALLY start expecting the unexpected?

At what point in life do we really start expecting the unexpected?

I mean REALLY expect it?

I planned to do yoga before the boys woke up this morn, but I just couldn’t help myself & decided to do just ONE more thing first…

I’ll JUST fold the basket of clean towels…Certainly they’ll sleep at least another 30 minutes…

And then…Just as I folded the last towel…I heard the little footsteps.  The adorable footsteps that I love to hear but also make me cringe slightly on days like today…

Days I want to get just ONE more thing done before hearing them…

So, with folded towels still on the table AND yoga still undone, Miles pulled me to the couch, crawled onto my lap, pulled a blanket up & snuggled in.

Neither laundry nor yoga was his concern.

It’s times like these I’m especially appreciative of how far I’ve come.

Of the fact that I’m able to more fully appreciate morning cuddles.

The fact that I’m able to more fully appreciate his little voice once actually attempting yoga…

When he announces, “I’m a burrito!” while rolling into the front of my yoga mat.

&…

“I’m doing sit ups with my head, Mama” while conveniently crouched between my legs during my attempted downward facing dog.

We seldom experience a day with zero surprises.  Yet we’re always at least a little surprised by them, aren’t we?

Maybe it’s our kiddos’ footsteps sooner than expected.

Maybe it’s a derecho.  That’s not on ANYONE’s radar, is it?

Maybe it’s a layoff.

Maybe it’s a virtual graduation ceremony due to covid.

Maybe it’s rain on a day we had simply wanted to go to the park.

But there really is some level of good in nearly everything unexpected.

Although it’s often…maybe even USUALLY…very hard to see or understand at the time.

Something I’m reminding myself of ALL the time…

Who wants a life that goes as expected, anyway?

Sometimes we can feel like we’re drifting through life…

Like we’re simply going through life on auto pilot…

Can’t we?

So how boring would it be if it went as expected, too?

Where’s the fun in that?

Whatever unexpected event you’re working through at this particular moment, you’ll get through it, & at some point, you’ll see something good that came from it.
