Ever think you shouldn't do what doesn't make sense to OTHER people?

Sep 01, 2020

Ever feel like you shouldn't think or do something because it doesn't make sense to OTHER people?

Yesterday the boys were at their grandma's, & when I picked them up, Miles was creating something by pounding nails into the ground & connecting string in various places throughout her yard.

He was so proud to show me what he had done...Not because he was looking for acceptance or permission to continue, but because HE was excited about following through with his vision.

"Whatch'ya building there, buddy?"

"I don't know."

He didn't even pause to consider his answer.  Didn't care if I knew or not.  Didn't care if he had a name for it or not.

He was just pleased I hadn't taken the hammer as he continued to assess his progress & consider his next move.

Grandma asked him if it was a trap for raccoons.

"I don't know."

"Is it a trap for squirrels?"

He didn't bother to respond.

So funny, isn't it?  That somehow hearing his logic would have appeased us?  That we would EVER expect a solid, rational response from a 6-year old?

What if he had said it was a raccoon trap?

"Ooooohhh….A raccoon trap.  Now THAT makes sense."

Or a squirrel trap?

"Oooohhh…a squirrel trap.  I've been meaning to get one of those…Need to reduce the killer squirrel population in the neighborhood."

(Actually…Realizing it may be a good idea to keep his creation up through the rest of the year…just in case.)

But my point is, he didn't CARE if we understood.

He didn't care if it made sense at ALL.

It made sense to HIM, & our questions were simply mildly annoying distractions.

What appeared to be pointless nonsense to an adult was an absolute necessity in his mind.

So when he finished attaching the final string to the tree & said, "Ok!  Done!" I knew he had accomplished his goal, & we could leave in peace.

What would YOU do if you didn't care about people understanding?

If you gave yourSELF permission?

If you put yourself into the shoes of a 6-year old & enjoyed the process?

Perhaps without absolute clarity on what you’re ultimately trying to achieve?

Maybe you don't have a name for it.

Maybe you don’t know HOW you’ll do it.

Maybe you're concerned it will take too long.

What's holding you back?

One thing is certain, your timeline will only lengthen if you never START.

What can you start this week?
