Lassie Takeaways

May 11, 2024

"Back in the day, Moms made their kids pancakes & stuff for breakfast. So kids were healthier then. And they didn't need to get up so early."

"Back in the day, huh? Are you sure about that?"

"Yeah...In the 40s or something. I know because I read Lassie."

This was my conversation with my 12-year-old this morning.

Here's how it applies to you.

Everyone takes something different from EVERYthing.

Some Lassie readers may have focused on the fact that it took place during the Great Depression, & losing their dog brought additional sadness & disappointment.

My son remembered it taking place in the 40s when they were served pancakes & slept in. I suspect he recalled them losing their dog as well, but that didn't come up.

No matter what the situation, someone else's interpretation will be different than we think it SHOULD be.

Whether it's your kid, a colleague, or someone on your team. When it matters, get curious. Investigate the other person's interpretation.

You may be surprised, & may learn the other person's expectations are much different from your own.
