Temporary Mediocrity

Nov 28, 2020
Attempted to keep our boys on task for "school at home" today & reminded myself of some glorious, insightful words a friend of mine shared last week...

A friend who planned to have her THREE boys home for at least the semester.

She's clearly a goddess.

She reminded me to be ok with mediocre...for now.  It's temporary.

Working from home or not, attempting to keep our kids focused on school every day is not normal.  (whatever that even is anymore)

And if I accept temporary mediocrity, I'll be more likely to recognize the extraordinary...

Like when our kids learn in non-structured ways.

Such as when her son explained how glass was made because he "learned it from Minecraft."

I have no idea how glass is made, & neither did my friend...until her Minecraft educated 7-year-old told her.

Our boys are learning all KINDS of stuff from Minecraft, but I had never given it much thought in the past..At least I hadn't given it much positive thought.

But now that I have...Look at me kicking butt with my Minecraft parenting. 🙂

They're learning.  It doesn't have to be in the "normal" way.

To my knowledge, they're not actually attempting to make glass on their own.

They're not burning down the house...yet.

So I'm giving myself more grace this week, & I'm focusing on the stuff that REALLY matters.

Like on spending calmer, quality time with them...Rather than anxiety provoking, intermittent spurts explaining the importance of completing math exercise 2.1.

Give yourself grace, too.

Whatever YOUR "crazy" looks like, recognize it's temporary.  Ok...At least some of all this 2020 business is temporary-ish. ðŸ˜‰

Recognize the extraordinary moments.

And give yourself some credit for them.

Getting through ANY of this year is quite extraordinary.

Hang in there.  We've gotten this far.
