We survived the first round...aka 2020. We can get through 2021, too. 😉

Jan 22, 2021

Izaak, our 9-year old, came home from school on Monday with tears in his eyes.

“What’s wrong, buddy?  Did something happen at school?”

“I have homework tonight.”  He looked up with me with big, sad eyes.

“Well, yeah, buddy.  You’re in 4h grade...You’re old now.  You have homework sometimes.”

“Yeah, but I have ‘focus’ on my vision board, & I still didn’t get it done.  I got it done at school every day last week, but I didn’t get it done today.”

My heart melted & broke at the same time.  He remembered what the hell a vision board was??  And he actually remembered making one & what he put on it??  And he was disappointed by something because of it?

I assumed his vision board would be remembered (if at all) as a fun thing he did over the weekend to get me to stop talking.  But maybe he actually got something out of it?

So we had a long talk about how some days are just better than others.  That was normal & to be expected.  It didn’t mean he wasn’t meeting his goals or couldn’t!  It just meant he didn’t have as great of a day as he had the previous week.  That was it!

“You know what, buddy?  Mom’s focus is better some days relative to others, too.”

He looked at me & smiled with relief & potentially a little alarm & sadness...Possibly thinking, “You’re almost 46 & don’t have this crap figured out?  Is this the way life is?”

Whether he really thought it or not, the answer was “yes”.

None of us figures everything out, do we?

We all have some days that are better than others, some days that are less ideal & some that just suck.

Some days we may even move further from our goals rather than closer.

Yes, that really is life...whether we’re 9, 46, in between or beyond.

We’re all figuring it out.

But does that mean those days are failures?  Does that mean we’re failures?  That we’ll never progress or meet our goals?

No.  It means we’re normal.

We all get tired.  We all slow down…We just need to keep getting up & trying again the next day.

We need to keep going.

We survived the first round...aka 2020.  We can get through 2021, too. 😉
