Who are you meant to be?

Jun 05, 2021

Do you know who you really are?  Who you’re meant to be?

Some days, does it seem like everyone else knows who they are except you?

And other days it seems like monks & the author of Eat, Pray, Love are the only ones who really know?

And unless you figure out a way to get out of the daily grind & escape to a Buddhist monastery, you’ll never figure it out?

I felt that way.  But the thought of sitting still for more than 12 minutes made me twitch, so a monastery was out of the question.

Luckily, I figured it out without going the monastery route.

It wasn’t overnight, but here are a few questions that can help you, too.

Who were you as a kid?

What did you like to do?

How were you described?  Naughty?  Shy?  A good listener?  Active?  Defiant?

Were those things true? Are they true now?

Did you build with Legos?  Or were Legos the last thing on your list?

Did you prefer to play alone?  Or were you constantly surrounding yourself with other kids?

Was including everyone a big deal for you? Or did you just do your thing, & others could join if they wanted?

Did you get in trouble a lot?  And if you did, what did you get in trouble for? Talking? Doing your own thing?  Taking everything apart?

If no one would help you with something, did you figure out a way to do it yourself?  Or were you patient?

Did you ask a lot of questions?

Were you a people pleaser?

Chances are, a lot of those things are still core to who you are, but they look different now.

Instead of building with Legos, maybe you design houses now instead. Or maybe you do nothing related to building & wonder why.

Maybe you were considered “bossy”, & now you’re a high school principal.

Or maybe you were told “bossy” was a bad thing, & somewhere along the way you learned to focus solely on yourself instead.

Whatever it looks like for you, I encourage you to ask yourself these questions & consider if you're being the person you want to be now.

Who were you back when you didn’t know any better?

Who do you want to be?

Who are you meant to be?
